January is one of the best months of the year to job search. Here's how to take advantage of the reset energy and the surge in employer hiring activity.
January brings a genuine surge in hiring activity. Budgets are reset, headcount approvals that were delayed through the holidays get processed, and companies that were waiting for the new year to post roles do it all at once. At the same time, most job seekers are just getting started - meaning the competition is lower in early January than it will be in February.
If you've been thinking about making a change, January is the time to act. Here's how to structure the first month for maximum impact.
Week one: get your materials ready
Before you send a single application, spend week one getting your materials into shape. Update your resume with accomplishments from the past year. Refresh your LinkedIn headline and summary to reflect what you're looking for. Identify three to five companies you'd genuinely be excited to work for.
Don't skip the LinkedIn refresh. In January, recruiters are actively sourcing, and a profile that signals availability and relevant experience will generate inbound interest. Add 'Open to Work' visibility if you're comfortable with it, or update your headline to signal your expertise and direction.
Weeks two and three: apply with focus
Apply to roles that genuinely match your profile and that you'd be genuinely excited about. Quality beats volume in job search. Five targeted, tailored applications will generate more callbacks than fifty generic ones. For each application, take two minutes to customize the first paragraph of your cover letter to the specific role and company.
Simultaneously, activate your network. Reach out to people in roles or companies you're targeting and ask for 20-minute conversations. Not asking for a job - asking for information about the role, the company, or the field. Most people are happy to talk about their work, and these conversations generate both leads and references.
Week four: evaluate and adjust
At the end of January, review what's working. Which application channels are generating responses? Which roles are getting interviews? Which are going silent? Use the data to adjust your approach for February rather than continuing to do the same things.
Job search is an iterative process. The approach that works is the one you refine based on feedback, not the one you decide on in week one and stick with regardless of results. January's role is to generate data as much as it is to generate interviews.
