Why Should We Hire You? How to Actually Answer This

Phil D. Position·August 5, 2024

This question is a gift, not a trap. Here's how to turn it into the strongest moment of your interview.

"Why should we hire you?" is the most direct invitation an interviewer can give you. They're literally asking you to make your case. Most candidates treat it as a trap or an awkward moment and give a vague, self-deprecating answer. Don't.

This is your closing argument. Treat it like one.

What they're actually asking

When an interviewer asks this question, they want to know three things: Do you understand what the role requires? Do you have the skills and experience to deliver? And can you articulate that clearly and confidently?

The answer to this question should be specific to the role and company, not generic. 'I'm a hard worker who learns fast' answers the question for every job ever posted. It means nothing. 'You're trying to build out your enterprise sales function, and I've spent the last five years doing exactly that at a company in an adjacent market. I know the playbook, I've made the mistakes, and I know how to build a team that scales.' That answers the question.

Build your answer on three pillars

First, demonstrate that you understand the job. Briefly name the core challenge or objective the role exists to address. This shows you've paid attention in the interview and done your research beforehand.

Second, map your experience to it. One or two specific examples of work you've done that's directly relevant. Quantified where possible.

Third, close with conviction. Reiterate your interest and readiness. 'I'm genuinely excited about this, and I'm confident I can hit the ground running.' Confidence isn't arrogance - it's a prerequisite for being taken seriously.

Keep it to two minutes

The answer should be complete but not rambling. Two minutes is enough time to make a strong case without losing the interviewer. Practice it until it flows naturally.

If you've done the work of preparing a solid 'tell me about yourself,' this answer should feel familiar - it's the same logic, now explicitly framed as your pitch for the role.
