Relocation Packages: What to Ask For and What to Negotiate
Relocation packages vary enormously across companies - from nothing to six figures. Knowing what's reasonable to ask for and how to ask for it can make a big difference in the real cost of a move.
Not all companies offer relocation assistance automatically, and those that do offer very different things. A 'relocation package' might mean a lump-sum payment of $3,000, or it might mean full household goods shipping, temporary housing, home sale assistance, and a cost-of-living allowance. The difference is often negotiable, and many candidates don't know to ask.
If a job requires you to move, the financial cost is real and significant. Getting the relocation conversation right is worth the effort.
What packages typically include
Standard components of corporate relocation packages include: lump-sum payment (the most flexible, simplest to administer), household goods moving services (full packing and transport), temporary housing for 30 to 90 days, travel costs for house-hunting trips, lease termination assistance, and cost-of-living differential for moves to higher-cost cities.
More generous packages - typically reserved for senior roles or hard-to-fill positions - may include home sale assistance (buying your current home if it doesn't sell quickly), home purchase assistance (covering closing costs or points), school search support, and spouse or partner career transition services.
How to negotiate
Relocation negotiation should happen during the offer negotiation phase, not after you've accepted. Start by asking what relocation support is standard for the role. If the answer is nothing or a small lump sum, you can make a specific, reasoned ask: 'The move from Boston to San Francisco involves significant costs - I was hoping for [specific package components] to make the transition work.'
Come with data. Get actual quotes for moving companies, research temporary housing costs in the destination city, and know your current lease terms. Specific numbers make a much stronger case than vague appeals to 'high cost of moving.' If they can't meet your ask in cash, ask whether any components can be covered directly as expenses.
The tax implications
Relocation assistance is taxable income under current tax law. A $10,000 lump sum relocation payment will be added to your W-2 income and taxed at your marginal rate. Some employers gross up relocation payments to cover the tax impact - meaning they give you enough additional money so that after taxes you receive the intended amount.
Ask specifically whether the relocation package is grossed up. If not, factor the tax cost into your evaluation of the package. A $10,000 relocation allowance in the 32% tax bracket is effectively $6,800 after federal taxes - which changes the math on whether it covers your actual costs.
