Age discrimination is illegal and documented. Here's how to present yourself in a way that puts your experience front and center without flagging your age.
Age discrimination in hiring is illegal under the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) and similar state laws, and it's also well-documented. Older workers face real headwinds in many industries, particularly in tech. Knowing this doesn't make it acceptable - but it does mean there are strategies worth understanding.
The goal isn't to pretend you're younger. It's to present yourself in a way that leads with your value and doesn't unnecessarily anchor the interviewer on your age.
Resume adjustments
Don't include your graduation year if you graduated more than 15-20 years ago. It's not required, and it does nothing except invite calculation. List your work history for the last 15 years, not 30 - earlier experience can be summarized as 'earlier career includes...' without going year by year.
Remove outdated technologies and platforms from your skills section. Listing software or systems that haven't been relevant for a decade marks you as out of date rather than experienced. Focus your skills section on what's current and competitive.
Staying current
The most effective defense against age discrimination is being demonstrably current in your field. Take recent courses, earn current certifications, use modern tools, and show that you're actively engaged with where your field is going rather than where it's been.
LinkedIn activity helps here. Posting, commenting, and sharing current, relevant content establishes you as a current practitioner rather than a legacy one.
In the interview
Interviewers cannot legally ask your age, graduation year, or when you've worked. Don't volunteer this information unless it's directly relevant. Focus the conversation on your most recent and relevant work, your current skills, and your energy and enthusiasm for the role.
Address the elephant in the room if it makes sense. 'I've been in this field for a while, and what I bring is pattern recognition and depth of experience that's hard to develop quickly. I'm also genuinely energized by [specific current thing in the field].' Confidence and currency are the best response to unspoken concerns.
