This position is for the APM Services team. You will be building, improving, and maintaining the backend systems that sit at the heart of New Relic's APM product — from the agent lifecycle pipeline that handles millions of agent connections and registrations, to the metrics pipeline that ingests, processes, and stores timeslice data at massive scale.

Our systems power the core APM experience: response time, throughput, error rate, and the hundreds of other signals customers rely on every day. We work with data at scale, and our pipeline is built with a diverse tech stack (Kotlin, Java, Kafka, Cassandra, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Redis, public cloud services, and more). You will work with a team of talented engineers, solving complex distributed system challenges and delivering solutions for our customers.

What You'Ll Do

- Build, maintain, and scale backend services across the APM data pipeline — from agent connection and registration through metric ingestion, processing, and storage - Participate in architectural definitions with a high degree of innovation and creativity - Work closely with product and experience teams to understand product specifications and influence the roadmap for the APM product at New Relic - Create automation and tooling to make our systems more scalable and easier to deploy - Work in an agile environment with a DevOps approach — teams build and maintain their own software, including participating in on-call rotations - Use AI tools to accelerate your development workflow, from writing and reviewing code to investigating production issues, and help the team adopt what works - Embrace a culture of technical excellence and shared knowledge This role requires Experience with distributed systems, concurrency, and scaling in production environments Strong experience writing software in OOP languages (Kotlin, Java, Go, etc.) and comfort adapting to different languages and frameworks Familiarity with asynchronous programming techniques: streams, event-based flows, task queues, message queues Comfort working in a fast-paced environment focused on delivering production code at a regular cadence using Agile techniques, tools, and methodologies A collaborative work style that includes colleagues in important decisions and leads to shared code ownership Adaptability in a rapidly changing industry, curiosity about AI and readiness to enhance your development workflow Proficiency in English Bonus points if you have Contributions to open source projects Understanding of the value that build and test automation brings to development team efficiency and reliability, with passion for applying these techniques Experience with APM instrumentation, the OpenTelemetry ecosystem, or related industry knowledge Familiarity with large-scale data pipelines
